| NST: Better for pregnant women to resign
Hv u mommies read this letter published on New Sunday Times, written by a woman who i guess againts that 90 days maternity leaves.
Maternity leave: Better for pregnant women to resign2010/05/29I REFER to the report “Shahrizat: Decision in two months”. I feel that maternity leave is a very generous benefit for the employee, but quite disadvantageous to the employer who must keep a position vacant and pay a salary to a person who is not working. A woman who intends to have a child should resign the moment she is pregnant because her condition becomes delicate and she will not be able to perform her duties.
Even the best work environments present some hazards and this will affect the health of both mother and baby.
Many childbirth complications are because of the mother’s rugged lifestyle and partly because she has to work.
The government would achieve a better result in reducing social ills by awarding a pension to homemakers and housewives rather than by extending maternity leave.
Full-time mothers and wives work just as hard as women who hold regular employment, if not harder, yet their work goes unrecognised and unrewarded.
This group of women should be awarded a pension to protect them from being abused or neglected by their male relatives.
I see no benefit in paying an employee who is not at work and does not do what his or her job description requires.
Experience is no doubt to be treasured and while all employees are useful, no one is indispensable.
If the government has extra money to spend, it should implement a minimum wage first, which would be more beneficial to the economy, the job market, and the children who are the future generation.
Social rights groups in the west have bankrupted half of their businesses there by forcing them to pay benefits which are not earned and which businesses cannot afford.
And now they are trying to do the same in the east. Women should be reasonable and not ask for too much.
They should also not only think of themselves but spare a thought for their children who may not have such a bright future if they continue to ask to be rewarded for not working.
