The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) was founded in 1975 and has been recognised for the quality of its academic and research programmes. FME offers 8 undegraduate programmes in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical-Automotive Engineering, Mechanical-Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical-Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical-Industrial Engineering, Mechanical-Materials Engineering, Mechanical-Marine Technology, and Industrial Design. In addition to the undergraduate degrees, the faculty also offers graduate programmes leading to the degree of Master of Engineering (MEng) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in various fields of mechanical engineering. The faculty's state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation provide the support tools for comprehensive educational and research activities. These are supplemented by specialised university research facilities. FME has received numerous national awards for both research and teaching achievement. Our graduates have been very successful and have risen to distinguished positions in the industry, government and academia. The faculty participates yearly in the numerous research awards.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia has a long history of quality engineering education and research. The FME, with a total undergraduate and graduate enrollment of about 2300 students, is one of the largest engineering faculties in Malaysia.

Students have an opportunity to delve into a broad range of research areas such as energy, environment, information technology, manufacturing, and transportation. Major research projects are under way in ,among others, advanced materials, biofuel, turbomachinery, combustion technology, and biomedical engineering. In all of these areas, research is being conducted to uncover the underlying physical phenomena with a view toward controlling and designing systems for desired attributes. Also under way are research projects to develop enabling technologies such as new engine technology, microturbine technology and computational methods. Much of the research is conducted within the faculty, but many projects are carried out in collaboration with other faculties and centres on campus, as well as with other national universities and with industrial partnership and collaborations.

The faculty operates several national laboratories, research centres and national instututes including Automotive Development Centre (ADC), Marine Laboratory, Institute of Noise and Vibration, and Aeronautical Laboratory. In addition to these, FME also houses several reseach laboratories including Robotic and Mechatronic Lab, Material Engineering Laboratory, Applied Mechanics and Materials Testing Laboratory, Production and Industrial Engineering Laboratory, and CAD/CAE Laboratory.
